The 5 Stages of Divorce: What to Expect

1. Application for Divorce

One or both partners submit a divorce application. Thanks to no-fault divorce laws introduced in 2022, this stage is now less confrontational as there is no need to assign blame to either party.

2. Acknowledgement of Service

Once the application is served, the other partner formally confirms receipt. This step ensures transparency, keeps both parties informed and allows the process to progress efficiently.

3. Conditional Order

The Court reviews the application and if requirements are met, grants a Conditional Order (formerly known as “Decree Nisi”) – the formal confirmation that divorce can proceed.

4. Reflection Period

A 20-week waiting period follows, giving everyone time to consider important arrangements for children, finances and housing. During this time, our team supports you and keeps your children’s wellbeing central in every conversation.

5. Final Order

After six more weeks following the Reflection Period, the Applicant can apply for a Final Order (formerly known as “Decree Absolute”). Once granted, the Final Order legally ends the marriage, allowing each person to move forward with reassurance about their future.
